Milwaukee rugby event awarded first stop on national sevens circuit

Today the Milwaukee Rugby Sevens Association received official word that the Lakefront 7s rugby tournament was selected as an official venue for the USA Rugby National Club Sevens Championship.

Every year in August, USA Rugby organizes the Championship to determine the top rugby sevens clubs in the nation. To be eligible for the Championship, teams compete around the country in a series of Qualifier events in their geographic region.

In the Midwest, two women’s teams and two men’s teams are selected to represent the region at the Championship. The local selection process is called the Midwest Sevens Qualifier Series and consists of a set of events held across the region at locally organized rugby sevens tournaments.

On June 27th, the Milwaukee-based Lakefront 7s — the largest summer rugby event in the nation — will host the first leg of the women’s series and the second leg of the men’s series.

The dates and locations of the full series is as follows:

  • June 20, 2015, Madtown 7s (Madison, WI) — Men only
  • June 27, 2015, Lakefront 7s (Milwaukee, WI) — Men & Women
  • July 11, 2015, Cin City 7s (Cincinnati, OH) — Men & Women
  • July 18, 2015, Rock Hard 7s (Grand Rapids, MI) — Men & Women
  • July 25, 2015, Firehouse 7s (Lemont, IL) — Men & Women

“We are thrilled to again be selected as a qualifier venue,” said Victor Drover, tournament director. “We’ve done a lot of work so far and hope to make 2015 our best event ever.”
