In their third consecutive Qualifier finals at the Lakefront 7s, the Chicago Lions defeated Youngbloodz in a one-sided affair as the sun began set on a magnificent day of rugby.
Youngbloodz, having lost just one match to the Lions in pool play and winning the 4th seed in the knock-out stage, were the dark horse in the knock-out stage as they faced 1st-seed Griffins in the semi-final.
With a whopping 19 tries during the seeding round, Griffins were heavily favored to advance to the final.
Unfazed by the seeding, the Youngbloodz were aggressive on defense and created numerous scoring opportunities over an increasingly frustrated Griffins side.
In perhaps the most exciting match of the bracket, the Youngbloodz finished 17-5 over their rivals to earn a spot in the final.
The Lions went undefeated in pool play with 13 tries and, for the third consecutive year, met their old rivals Milwaukee RFC.
The Lions put on another confident display to earn a 28-0 shut-out win and advance to the championship match.
In the final, the Youngbloodz were denied possession and any meaningful territory for long periods as the Lions ran through the paces.
After a long day of defense, the Youngbloodz eventually ran out of steam as Lions cruised to a 35-7 victory.
The third-place match saw Griffins brawling Milwaukee RFC with at least 2 red cards and yellow in the first half. The tight match was never out of reach for anyone with Griffins winning by just a conversion kick, 19-17.
