Nolan Day — coach of the Midwest High School Boys Thunderbirds select-side — reached out yesterday and asked us here at the Lakefront 7s to forward on some information regarding their upcoming ID camp and subsequent trip to the Los Angeles 7s in February.

With the ID camp tomorrow (12/21/2019) in Chicago, time is very short but we wanted to do what we could to help spread the word and get more kids playing rugby.

The required Player Profile form is attached below, as are the full details provided to us. So if you’re in the area and available, try to make it out!

2019 hsb thunderbirds player profile form

Summary

We are looking for the best few players from each state that have played varsity at least two years and or are extremely fast. *Players must have a current USA/Cipp registration.

ID Camp Details

  • Schedule
    • Day 1 will be on Sat Dec 21 from 3 to 6pm at LeClaire Hearst park in Chicago, for GPS use 4400 S. Leamington Chicago(Just south of 55 and west of Cicero)-team dinner to follow. We will be outside so bring boots and warm ups.
    • Day 2 on Sun Dec 22 will be at the CORE 16028 127th in Lemont(mtg room inside) from 8:30 to 11:30- out of state players bring a towel for a shower.
  • Accommodations
    • For out of state players there is a low cost hotel in Lemont call D-Lux for approx $75 total. More hotels in nearby Bolingbrook.
    • We might have a couple of IL families willing to host, but the boys must be kept in pairs.
  • Selections
    • Selections will be made in late Dec.
    • Boys selected will need to show proof of airline ticket purchase by 1/6/20, or the next player on the list will be moved onto the roster so they still have time to get a ticket at a decent price.
  • Flights
    • As of last week I found a ticket on Google tickets for $182 R/T from Chicago into LAX-no checked bags. By late Dec I would expect $300 to $400 from a Midwest airport. If your parent has award miles I would book the ticket now. If you do not make the team you can put the miles back into the account.
  • Costs
    • Cost for the ID camp weekend and dinner is $40.
    • Make check out to Midwest Youth Rugby or you can Venmo me @Nolan-Day-3.

7s camp in Feb

The LA 7s prep camp weekend is to be held Feb 15pm and Feb 16am in the Chicagoland area TBA. Players must have a current USA/Cipp registration.

Trip Details

  • Land package will be approx $500 (approx $75 added if you plan to stay over on the Sunday night) plus your airfare to LAX from your airport of choice. Meals except what you eat in the stadium and kit are included.
  • We will be staying in Hermosa Beach, which is close to where the HSBC World Series 7s is held in Carson on Sat and Sun.You will need to be in by 3pm on Thursday Feb 27th. We will have LAX pick ups at noon, 1:30 and 3pm. Drop offs at LAX on Sunday will be at 8am and 10am. On Monday as needed.
  • If the player’s grades are solid, I suggest they stay over until Monday so they can watch all of the World Series rugby on Sunday and have some beach time. For those that can fly out after noon on Monday, we will have a SUP(stand up paddle board) lesson in Redondo harbor or boogie boarding(waves and rip tide dependent) early am with Coach Day.
  • Speed coach Tim Graf, who has helped 40 plus players make it in the NFL, will be working with the players on Dec 21, and provide a weekly program that will greatly increase our team speed by the time we arrive in CA.
