Chicago Lions sweep Men’s and Women’s Qualifier brackets at 2013 Lakefront 7s

Chicago Lions - 2013 Qualifier Champions

The Chicago Lions exerted their dominance today in the Midwest Rugby Sevens Qualifier series held today at the Milwaukee Lakefront.

The Lakefront 7s is the third stop for the Men’s Qualifier series and the second for the Women’s Qualifier. In each case, the two top-most ranked teams at the end of the series will represent the Midwest at the National Rugby Sevens Championship in August.

Men’s Qualifier

In the Men’s Qualifier, the Lions finished top of a pool weakened by a last-minute forfeit by Carps out of Cleveland, giving the visitors from the Windy City a significant rest advantage going into the playoffs.

The Chicago Griffins produced 3 convincing wins in their pool to take the second seed.

The third seed came from a pool featuring both Wisconsin-based teams — Barbarians and WRFC — as well as Youngbloodz (Minneapolis) and 1823 (Columbus). With the Barbarians and 1823 tied for second place in the Midwest standings, this ‘pool of death’ was pivotal for both teams.

After three matches, the Milwaukee Barbarians emerged as the third see overall with a 3-0-0 sweep.

Western Michigan University (WMU) took the last of the top-4 seeds with their strongest showing this season — a 2-1-0 record including a narrow 19-12 loss to the Lions.

In the semi-finals, the Lions defeated WMU convincingly (33-5) while the Barbarians swept aside the Griffins in a 36-0 shutout.

The final continued the lopsided scores with the Barbarians unable to penetrate the Lions defense and ultimately falling 31-0.

Women’s Qualifier

Like the Men, two teams from the Midwest qualify for the nationals and the Lions entered the Lakefront 7s in third place behind DFRC (Detroit, MI) and 1st-place Youngbloodz (Minneapolis, MN).

The 8-team bracket was filled out by Sirens (Chicago, IL), Scylla (Milwaukee, WI), WWRFC (Madison, WI) and two teams from outside the Midwest territory, NOVA 1 and NOVA 2 (Arlington, VA).

In pool play, Youngbloodz showed why they are at the top of the table with a 3-0-0 sweep of their pool and a first-place seed in the playoff round.

In the playoffs, Youngbloodz met the 4th seeded Lions who left pool play with a 2-0-1 record having played to a 0-0 draw against NOVA 1.

The playoff match was a tight contest with both teams scoring a single try and the Lions inching ahead by just the conversion.

In the final, Lions got to play the rematch against NOVA 1 and captured 1st place in a tight 14-7 contest.
