About the event

“Papa” Joe Kloiber is a historic figure in Wisconsin’s rugby history.

In 1975 he formed the Westside Harlequins Rugby Football Club. He played for the club until 2006 — playing his last game at the age of 62 alongside 4 of his children — and managed as President until 2012. In 1982 he started the Lakefront 7s, one of the longest-running and largest rugby tournaments in the country.

Post-retirement, Papa Joe continued to be a positive influence for the sport by co-founding the Marquette University High School team.

In 2012, he was instrumental in the formation of the Milwaukee Barbarians Athletic Club. Even though the formation of the Barbarians meant that the Harlequins RFC has faded into the history books, Papa Joe felt this was necessary to form a larger club in Milwaukee that could compete in Division I at the National level.

In 2009, Papa Joe was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. This was a blow to him personally and to all who know him.

In recent years, it has become more difficult for him to talk and harder for him to walk but he presses on. Having completed 2 marathons in his life, Joe has had to give up running. Fortunately, he still hops on his bike for 10-20 mile rides.

Papa Joe is also passionate about golf and in his younger years he would play 36 holes of golf every day of summer vacation. He no longer plays 36 holes in a day, but still loves the game. Though his long drives and precision chips have faded from their glory, he still loves to get out and hit 'em.

The purpose of this event is to honor an man who has given so much to the Wisconsin rugby community by raising money for noble causes.

The short term goals will give proceeds from the event to the Wisconsin Parkinson's Association and towards the development of youth rugby in Wisconsin via donations to the Wisconsin Rugby Football Union, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The long term goal is to grow the fundraiser so that we could continue to donate to the Wisconsin Parkinson's Association as well as set up an annual rugby scholarship so that underprivileged students would have help perusing their collegiate dreams while continuing to play the game that Papa Joe and so many have come to love.
