Back in 2009 I was watching my club — then the Milwaukee Harlequins — play a match when I noticed a young man on the far side of the pitch taking photos. This is not uncommon in sports but two things caught my eye.
First, the lens he was using was massive and was cream-colored, like the ones you normally see being used in stadiums by professional photographers. Second, the man was making his way around the pitch in a wheelchair, undeterred by the soft turf!
Thinking he might be on assignment from a local newspaper, I headed over for a chat. That is how I met Rick Benavides (see photo above, second from right), one of the best sports photographers in Southeastern Wisconsin.
The 2021 Lakefront 7s was a great success and a well-needed reminder of the things we enjoyed prior to the pandemic. Below are a selection of the photos we took this year.
We’re really grateful to the sponsorship from the Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin. They have been a generous sponsor for many years. Their support is one of the reason we get these fantastic pics from the lens of Rick Benavides.
To see the full collection, please view photos on our Facebook page, and don’t forget to follow us there for notifications when more pictures are posted!
And if you’d like to hire Rick for your event (he LOVES shooting rugby), drop him a line at [email protected] or 262-716-1756.
Like most summer rugby events in America, TV cameras are nowhere to be found at the Lakefront 7s. That makes is difficult for us to evaluate the event.
Instead, we invite participants to give us feedback on the things that went right as well as those that did not. We use the survey results to improve future events. Despite the pandemic-related challenges this year, we are keen to hear your feedback this year. So please complete the survey below before July 9, 2021.
Note that we’ve streamlined the survey this year in an effort to improve the response rate. However, you may include detailed ratings as well if you prefer (see below).
Please note that barring any errors, the schedule is now finalized. If any team fails to appear for a match, a forfeit scored at 28-0 will be awarded to the team that does appear. The schedule will then continue as shown above.
We could not be more thrilled to report that the 2021 Lakefront 7s has sold out!
We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the trust and support of everyone in the rugby community who stuck with us over the last 18 months as we tried to negotiate all the challenges a pandemic brings to a public, full-contact event. There has been a lot of uncertainty over the last few weeks in particular and so your faith in us and the event is truly humbling.
The organizing team has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on our preparations and today we can share the teams and pools for all divisions, as well as the disisional start times.
Note that teams must present their signed waiver at the checking table 1 hour before your division begins.
Today we received the truly wonderful news that our permit to use Veterans Park has been approved. This was the final hurdle and now we can say that the 2021 Lakefront 7s is most definitely going forward! We can’t wait to host you all on June 26!
A few spots remain for teams in the Women’s Super-Social, High School and HIPPOs divisions. And the waitlist is open for the other divisions. Please do continue to sign up if you can attend.
While awaiting approval of our permit application from Milwaukee County Parks for the use of our venue (Veterans Park), we announced last month that two dates had been reserved for the 2021 Lakefront 7s. Specifically, the preferred date of June 26th and the backup date of August 21st.
Additionally, Milwaukee County Parks has shared with us their guidance around reopening outdoor sports events such as walks and runs. They have also accepted our reopening plan in support of our permit application for Veterans Park.
With these developments in mind, the Lakefront 7s organizing committee has decided to forego the alternate date in August and put all our efforts into holding the event as planned on June 26, 2021. In other words, we are putting all our balls in one June basket!
We are hoping to receive feedback on our reopening plan by June 4. If accepted, we would expect the permitting process to follow shortly thereafter.
